Steve Nicol has told ESPN that he expects Javier Hernandez to leave West Ham United this month.

The Mexico striker’s future in East London is in doubt after his agent told Fox Sports this week that there is plenty of clubs interested in the out-of-favour hitman.

The 29-year-old, who joined West Ham under Slaven Bilic for £16 million last summer, is struggling for regular games under David Moyes and has only started once in the Premier League under him.

Hernandez scored in his cameo against Bournemouth last weekend for what was his fifth goal in 18 top-flight games for the Irons this season.

Joining the Hammers hasn’t proved to be as good a deal as West Ham fans thought it would be, and Nicol does not expect him to be there much longer.

He told ESPN: “I think this is a hit. No question. He needs to play. He left Manchester United and Germany because he wasn’t playing.

“He’s not playing back in England now so the only thing that can happen is he has to move. At this stage of his career he needs to be playing. This is absolutely a hit, but I don’t know where it’s going to be.”

Letting Hernandez go makes sense, but only if a top-drawer replacement is signed.

As mentioned, he hasn’t set the Premier League alight at West Ham and he is one of the club’s top earners, so getting him off the wage bill would also free up room for another big-name striker to come in.
