Champions League finalists Liverpool reportedly want to sign Brazil forward David Neres from Eredivisie leaders Ajax.

Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has encouraged Ajax forward David Neres to reject a move to Anfield this summer, in quotes reported by The Express.

Neres has been highly rated in Amsterdam for a while now but it is only in the last few months that he is starting to build a reputation as one of the brightest attacking talents anywhere in European football.

The former Sao Paulo forward has shot to fame during Ajax’s run to the Champions League semi-finals, while a tally of 12 goals and 15 assists in all competitions hasn’t done him any harm. Neres even made a sparkling debut for the Brazil national team in March.

And, according to Le10 Sport, Liverpool are one of many clubs interested in snapping up the 22-year-old in the off-season.

Nicol, however, believes Neres could be making a mistake if he joins a club who already boast the considerable talents of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino while not forgetting the rejuvenated Divock Origi.

“This is a strange one, Neres to Liverpool,” Nicol said.

“If I’m Neres, I’m looking at Liverpool’s front three and I’m asking myself ‘Am I going to this team to start? Or am I going to this team to back up to begin with?’.

“He’s certainly at a level of his ability and what he’s producing that he has to go somewhere and play. I think that rules Liverpool out.”

According to UOL, Liverpool will have to pay £38 million for Neres though it is far from certain that Ajax will sell, given that the Eredivisie leaders already look guaranteed to lose both Frenkie De Jong and Mattijs de Ligt.
