Divock Origi scored some crucial Champions League and Premier League goals for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in 2018/19.
Liverpool legend Steve Nicol believes Divock Origi must be sold this summer despite his role in the famous Champions League comeback against Barcelona, speaking to ESPN.
A £10 million signing from Lille in 2014, Origi appeared to have no future at Anfield this time last year. He found himself stuck in the U23s after returning to Merseyside on the back of a disappointing loan spell in Germany with Wolfsburg.
But, to the Belgian striker’s credit, he forced his way back into Jurgen Klopp’s first team plans and scored a number of crucial goals in 2018/19, including dramatic late winners against Everton and Newcastle United.
And Origi will always be a cult hero among Liverpool supporters thanks to his dramatic double in the stunning 4-0 Champions League semi-final triumph against Barcelona at Anfield.
But Nicol believes Liverpool should not let the odd moment of brilliance cloud Liverpool’s judgement.
“He has to go. From a Liverpool point of view, they can’t let him go until they actually have a replacement because they’re pretty thin on the ground when it comes to front players or certainly front players with the quality that is needed,” Nicol said.
“He will go, Liverpool will have been looking around and have some names.”
The Independent claimed after that Barca battering that Origi would be offered a new contract at Liverpool with his current deal set to expire in 2020.
