Liverpool have been linked with signing the two players throughout the course of this summer’s transfer window.

Head Coach Steve Nicol of the New England Revolution reacts during their game against the New York Red Bulls on June 10, 2011 at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey.

Steve Nicol suggested that he would love to see Liverpool sign Matthijs de Ligt and James Maddison this summer, when speaking exclusively to ESPN.

Th Reds enjoyed a wonderfully successful campaign last season, winning the Champions League and narrowly missing out on the Premier League title.

It could be argued that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp needs to strengthen his squad further still this summer, however, if they are to be successful once again next term.

Who should the Merseyside outfit be after this summer, however?

Nicol, who made 343 league appearances for Liverpool, urged Klopp to make two signings this summer, when speaking exclusively to ESPN:

Jonjo Shelvey of Newcastle United slides in to tackle James Maddison of Leicester City during the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Leicester City at St. James Park on...

“Yes they could do with signing some players. If you have a wish list, then my wish list would be another centre-back. Somebody like De Ligt I think would be incredible. I also would like somebody in the middle of the park who can do a little bit more than getting the ball back. Somebody like a James Maddison who has the ability to pick a pass and to score a goal.”

De Ligt seems to on his way to Juventus, according to Italian publication Calcio Mercato, so Liverpool’s hopes of signing the Dutchman could be all but over.

Maddison is available, however, although the Reds would have to pay close to £60 million in order to secure his signature, according to the Daily Star.

Liverpool must strengthen this summer, but the two players named by Nicol might just be out of their range.
