Liverpool legend Steve Nicol runs the rule over Everton’s interest in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Stevie Nicol has laughed off speculation linking Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with a move to Everton and backed Danny Ings to leave Liverpool in January.
Aubameyang is one of Europe’s best strikers and has 12 goals in 13 Bundesliga appearances this season to prove his proficiency.
But the Toffees are struggling in a big way this season, despite an expenditure of £150 million during the summer, and the Liverpool legend questioned to ESPN why this transfer would ever materialise.
He told ESPN: “Why! Why would Aubameyang leave Dortmund to go to Everton? It makes absolutely no sense to me. I’m sorry – I don’t see it. He’s going to want to go to a club involved in the Champions League and that isn’t going to be Everton anytime soon.”
On the subject of linked-away strikers, Liverpool’s Danny Ings is rumoured to be interesting a host of Premier League clubs in January.
The Guardian claimed this week that West Ham United and Newcastle United want him, and Nicol believes that the former Burnley hitman, whose two-year stint on Merseyside has been decimated by injury, will wind up leaving Anfield for good.
He added: “There’s no question that he doesn’t have a future at Liverpool. He was signed certainly as a squad player and of course with his injuries over the past couple of years….
“He just needs to play football again and the only way he does that is to leave Liverpool. This is an absolute no-brainer. Danny Ings, for his own good, has to leave Liverpool.”
Liverpool and Everton square off at Anfield on Sunday.
