Divock Origi has left Liverpool for VfL Wolfsburg in the summer transfer window. The 22-year-old striker has joined the German club on a season-long loan deal on transfer deadline day.
According to Sky Sports, Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg will pay Premier League club Liverpool a loan fee in the region of £6 million in order to secure the services of the Belgium international.
It has also been reported that the Wolves are also going to cover the 22-year-old’s wages for the 2017-18 campaign.
Origi joined Liverpool from Lille in the summer of 2014 for a transfer fee reported by The Guardian to be worth £10 million and was immediately sent out on loan to the French club for the 2014-15 campaign.
The Belgium international striker has struggled to establish himself in the Liverpool starting lineup for the past two seasons, and his move to Wolfsburg on loan does not come as a surprise.
Steve Nicol, though, will probably be surprised, as the Liverpool legend expected Origi to remain at Anfield this season.
Speaking ahead of Origi’s move to Wolfsburg, while admitting that he understands why the striker would want to leave Liverpool, Nicol told ESPN FC: “Unfortunately for him, Liverpool need a squad this year, fighting on four different fronts.
“As much as Origi would love to go and as much as it would be great for Origi, it’s not going to happen. I don’t see it.”
