Steve Nicol gives damning assessment of Tottenham’s season

The ESPN pundit has suggested that Spurs have been lucky to not lose in the league this term.

Pundit Steve Nicol has suggested on ESPN that Tottenham Hotspur have been lucky to string together an unbeaten start to the Premier League season.

Spurs head into Saturday evening’s clash against London rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge having gone undefeated in their first 12 Premier League games of the season.

Remarkably, remaining the only unbeaten team after a third of the season only leaves them in fifth place ahead of this weekend’s action.

That is because, though undefeated, Mauricio Pochettino’s side have also only won six games, drawing the other six to leave them four points off the pace set by the Blues at the top of the table.

Despite avoiding defeat thus far in the league, Spurs are on a run of just one win in the last nine games in all competitions, and crashed out of the Champions League in the group stage in midweek.

Nicol certainly does not appear to be impressed by what he has seen from the North London side this term.

The former Liverpool hero has not ruled out Spurs taking a point from Stamford Bridge, but suggested that they have been lucky in their league campaign thus far.

Nicol said on ESPN: “They could possibly take a point – they are the draw specialists. But if you’re looking for a winner, then you have to go with Chelsea, no question, the way they’re playing and the desire that they’re showing.

“Quite frankly, everyone can say they’ve not lost a game in the Premier League, but is it really just because they’ve been pretty lucky?

“They don’t generally give too much away, but who’s putting the ball in the back of the net for them? If Harry Kane has an off day, where is the goal coming from?”

Some fans may think that is a harsh assessment, but Tottenham have certainly been far from convincing in recent weeks.

In contrast, Chelsea have won their last six in the league without conceding, and the smart money would be on a home win this evening.
