Liverpool have been excellent so far in the Premier League

Steve Nicol has told ESPN that he does not believe his former club Liverpool will win the Premier League this season.

The Reds have enjoyed a very decent start to the season by winning 16 points from a possible 21, with a defeat at Burnley and a draw at Tottenham being the only blemishes in an otherwise excellent first seven games or so.

As it stands, Liverpool are fourth in the Premier League table, two points behind high-flying Manchester City and it certainly seems as if Jurgen Klopp’s side can at least challenge for the top-flight crown come May.

That was the view of Robert Lewandowski, who believes Klopp, whom he worked with at Borussia Dortmund, can win the title for Liverpool this season.

But Nicol, speaking to ESPN, is not convinced they will go all the way, joking that Lewandowski’s comments were simply borne out of his friendship with Klopp.

He said: “Lewandowski is being nice to Klopp. They’re great pals and they had a great relationship. I think Liverpool can compete for a top-four spot but I don’t think you can say they can compete for the Premier League title. Yes they’re doing well, but can they win the title? I don’t think so.”

It seems premature to write them off this early. So far, Liverpool are very much in the thick of things, but whether they can maintain their push all throughout the season might well depend on what Klopp does – or doesn’t do – in the Janaury transfer window.
