Liverpool have enjoyed an excellent start to the Premier League season.

Speaking to ESPN, Steve Nicol can see no reason why his former club Liverpool cannot qualify for the Champions League this season.

The Reds have enjoyed an excellent start to the Premier League season, and beat Chelsea 2-1 at Stamford Bridge last time out.

Jurgen Klopp’s side sit sixth in the table, five points behind top-of-the-standings Manchester City, and outside the top four on goal difference.

Liverpool have looked an excellent attacking force so far, netting 11 goals in five league outings, but a 2-0 blip away to newly-promoted Burnley is the reason why they are not doing better.

And Nicol believes that the Merseyside outfit can reclaim a Champions League spot if they can maintain their free-scoring form throughout the season.

“If they attack the way they did against Chelsea, and the way they’ve done all season, then they have a chance at the top four,” he told ESPN. “The question is can they defend consistently?”

They have been absent from the Champions League since the 2014-15 campaign, when Liverpool, then under Brendan Rodgers, finished behind Real Madrid and Basel in Group B to transfer into the Europa League.
