Liverpool lost their second Champions League game of the season tonight.
Speaking to BT Sport tonight, Steve McManaman has singled out Liverpool duo Roberto Firmino and Divock Origi for criticism.
Jurgen Klopp’s side lost 2-0 away to Red Star Belgrade in a defeat which threatens their progress into the knockout phase of the Champions League.
A double from Milan Parkov did the damage to Liverpool inside the opening half-hour, with the Reds only mustering three shots on target during what McManaman claims was a ‘toothless’ performance.
Firmino replaced Daniel Sturridge during the half-time break, while Klopp also threw on Origi for the final 11 minutes but neither player was able to influence the game.
And former Liverpool attacker McManaman says that the pair were both ‘very disappointing’.
“I also thought Liverpool would create far more chances, and good chances at that. They were pretty toothless tonight. We don’t normally say that about them,” he told BT Sports.
“Tonight they had a couple of chances on target but very little. Even their substitutes didn’t do anything. Firmino, [Divock] Origi didn’t have an impact on the game. Very disappointing.”
This is Liverpool’s second defeat in Group C after previously losing 1-0 away to Napoli, who visit Anfield in the last game of the group stage on December 11.
The Premier League side, who sit second in the group as it stands, will hope that they have qualified for the knockout phase by then, but their next game is away to French giants Paris Saint-Germain in easily their toughest European game of the season.
