Liverpool legend Steve McManaman has told FourFourTwo that his former club need another four signings to compete for the Premier League title.

The Reds have brought in defender Virgil van Dijk from Southampton this month, but have also lost influential playmaker Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona.

Interestingly, McManaman does not feel that a direct replacement for the Brazilian should be a priority to equip Jurgen Klopp with a championship-winning squad.

Philippe Coutinho of FC Barcelona runs with the ball during the La Liga match between Barcelona and Deportivo Alaves at Camp Nou on January 28, 2018 in Barcelona, Spain.

“Personally I’d like them to bring in another defender, probably another goalkeeper, and I’d like them to buy a centre-forward,” he is quoted as saying by FourFourTwo.

“I’d like to see a top-class centre-forward who you know will get 20 or 30 goals a season.

“I’d also like them to bring in some widemen just to change the play a little bit because I don’t think they have that.”

Klopp has confirmed to the Daily Mail that Liverpool will not be reinvesting the £145m that they received for Coutinho in this transfer window, having already spent £75m on Van Dijk – fee reported by BBC Sport.

Roberto Firmino’s 18-goal return this season has gone a long way to proving that he is a top-class number nine, but the Reds could do with another striker if Klopp has lot faith in injury-prone Daniel Sturridge.

Few Liverpool supporters would argue that improvements are needed goalkeeper and centre-back, weaknesses which are a huge factor in them being 18 points off the title pace set by Manchester City this season.

With Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane key players, a winger seems a strange choice by McManaman but both prefer to cut inside so Klopp may like to have a different option who can go down the outside.
