Adrian didn’t cover himself in glory for Liverpool on Saturday.
Steve McManaman has claimed that Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian can never make another mistake like the one at Southampton on Saturday.
Jurgen Klopp’s side looked set to cruise to a 2-0 win at St Mary’s yesterday, but a horrendous error from the Spaniard made the last 10 minutes far more uncomfortable than they should have been.
The Liverpool new boy, playing instead of injured Alisson, took an age to punt the ball away under no pressure, but his clearance ricocheted off Danny Ings and rolled into the net once the former Reds hitman tried to close him down.
Ironically, Alisson made a similar mistake early on in his career in England, and McManaman has told Premier League Productions that Adrian – whose penalty save led to Klopp’s side winning the European Super Cup in midweek – is already in the last chance saloon with regards to gaffes.
He said: “From the sublime during the week to the ridiculous today. To a certain extent you’re saying exactly the same thing when it happened to Alisson. That is your warning, that does not happen again.
“Eighty-first, 82nd minute, just kick it as far as you can to the end of the pitch. You don’t want to be messing around when you’re 2-0 up and you’re cruising to a victory after the week they’ve had.
“And that might be the warning sign that he will not do that ever again in a Liverpool shirt.”
The 32-year-old former West Ham star has 127 Premier League appearances under his belt.
Really, these things shouldn’t be happening to such an experienced figure, but it has and all Adrian can do from here is follow McManaman’s warning and ensure that he never makes the same mistake.
