Newcastle United have barely improved since John Carver’s reign.
Newcastle United’s spell under John Carver was widely regarded as one of the worst in the recent history at the club.
But the current reign of Steve McClaren is pushing him close and getting supporters just as angry.
12 months on from a season which saw Newcastle avoid relegation only after a final day victory, they are in the mire once again, sitting in 19th position with 10 games to go.
What makes this season all the more depressing is the £83 million which has been spent on players since last season.
The investment fans have been crying out for arrived, but whether the manager and subsequent choice of players was right, looks unlikely at this point.
McClaren is a man under pressure at Newcastle, and a comparison between his side and John Carver’s shows just why.
Steve McClaren’s Newcastle United
| Goals per game | Chances created per game | Successful final third passes per game | Shots per game | Shots allowed per game | Points per game | Games | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Newcastle | 1 | 8.29 | 71.18 | 10.32 | 15.46 | 0.86 | 28 |
John Carver’s Newcastle United
| Goals per game | Chances created per game | Successful final third passes per game | Shots per game | Shots allowed per game | Points per game | Games | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Newcastle | 0.95 | 8.74 | 75.42 | 12.16 | 11.21 | 0.68 | 19 |
While McClaren’s Newcastle United have gained more points on average than Carver’s 0.86 to 0.68, in several other areas they are worse.
Both teams have not even managed an average of a point per game, with the ‘improvement’ McClaren wanted to make, painfully slow.
Carver’s Newcastle actually created more chances per game, had more successful passes in the final third, and allowed fewer shots to the opposition.
Newcastle’s fans deserve better than they are getting, and now is surely the time to make a last ditch attempt to save the situation before it is too late.
