Could Liverpool make a shock move for Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez?

Steve McClaren has told Sky Sports that he believes Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez would be a fitting replacement for Philippe Coutinho at Liverpool.

Liverpool might have to replace the Brazilian schemer this month after reports from Sport in Spain indicated that he has told the Reds that he will not play for them again this season.

Arsenal can relate and Arsene Wenger might have the unenviable task of having to find a replacement for the Chilean, whose contract expires in the summer and rumours of a cut-price exit this month might not be wide of the mark.

The Mirror reported this week that Liverpool are demanding £160 million for the Barcelona-linked attacker, and former England coach McClaren believes the Anfield club should dedicate a chunk of that toward trying to lure Sanchez from North London.

“I would look at Sanchez from Arsenal as there may be a bit of movement there,” he told Sky Sports.

“£160m is a lot of money. You can buy a lot for that. Liverpool won’t want to lose Coutinho’s quality.

“Sanchez will be ambitious and he’s that type of player that could replace Coutinho.”

Coutinho is undoubtedly a fine, world-class player, but so is Sanchez and surely Liverpool fans wouldn’t be adverse to the idea of seeing the former Barcelona man on Merseyside.

Problem is, are they more tempting than Manchester City? Perhaps not, but surely the 29-year-old, who only just celebrated a birthday, would play a lot more regularly under Jurgen Klopp at Anfield than he would under Pep Guardiola at Eastlands.

The Reds need him, City don’t, and that might well be crucial.
