Could Steve McClaren replace Aitor Karanka?
Sacked… Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka
Middlesbrough have made the decision to part ways with manager Aitor Karanka, the club confirmed this morning.
Karanka departs by mutual consent, with Boro sitting in the relegation zone and in a poor run of form.
Middlesbrough have struggled to score goals all season and were eliminated from the FA Cup last weekend by Manchester City.
So who could replace former Real Madrid assistant Karanka?
It is early days and even the betting markets are being formulated, but the popular name doing the rounds on Twitter is Steve McClaren.
Former Derby manager Steve McClaren
McClaren is available after being fired by Derby County last weekend, his second spell at the club.
He made his name in management at Middlesbrough, leading them to a UEFA Cup final, and earning a shot at management with England, although the less said about that the better.
The prospect of returning to Middlesbrough to help save them has to be tempting, and at Derby and previously with Twente, he showed he is happy to ‘go back’, with two tentures at each club.
Here is a look at how Twitter reacted to Middlesbrough’s decison…
