Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane ripped up the record books in 2017, thanks in part to his Spurs teammates.
Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane is playing in the “perfect team” to continue his “phenomenal” goalscoring form, according to Steve McClaren on Sky Sports.
The 24-year-old ended 2017 with successive hat-tricks against Burnley and Southampton to set a new Premier League record for goals in a calendar year with 39.
The England international also outscored Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and others to finish last year as Europe’s top marksman with 56 goals for club and country.
Kane’s scoring feats would be enough to get him a move to any team in the world, but McClaren thinks that Spurs is the right place for him to continue to thrive because of how the team is set up.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the former England manager said: “What he is doing at the present moment is more than impressive, it is phenomenal. I think he is playing in a perfect team at Spurs. You’ve got to stop the supply to him. Spurs press teams, play around the opponent’s penalty box and I think Kane is ideal for that.
“He’s a poacher, a box player. He scores goals in the six-yard box and he’s got a great supply with crosses from Trippier and Rose the other side and Alli’s runs take a lot of defenders away from him, with his runs diagonally, and Eriksen also provides him with a lot of assists. I think he’s in the right team.”
Spanish publication Don Balon claims that Cristiano Ronaldo has demanded that Real Madrid sign Kane from Spurs to replace Karim Benzema, whose goals have dried up.
McClaren is correct that Mauricio Pochettino’s team is designed to get the best out of Tottenham’s homegrown hero, and that is a luxury that the forward may not be entitled to at Real.
While Kane is undoubtedly good enough to play for Madrid, he would have to settle for playing second fiddle to Ronaldo and that change of dynamic might harm his form.
