Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold is arguably the best right-back in the world, at this moment in time.
Steve McClaren has claimed that Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold ‘needs to do a little work’ on the defensive side of his game.
The former England coach praised Alexander-Arnold, and his fullback counterpart, Andy Robertson for the attacking side of their game, as he stated that they are ‘too good’.
During these past 12 or so months, Alexander-Arnold and Robertson have been one of the standout stories of this Jurgen Klopp team that lifted the Champions League trophy in June.
Speaking to Football Centre on Sky Sports News (15/10/2019), McClaren pointed out where Alexander-Arnold needs to improve in his game.
“Liverpool’s full-backs are too good,” McClaren told Sky Sports. “Attacking wise they are like wingers, they are creative, up and down the line. Plus, they are getting better defensively as well. Robertson has been a massive hit.
“Alexander-Arnold needs to do a little bit more work on his defensive side. But attacking, they are like wingers. Their attack is fantastic.”
Despite putting in such strong performances for his club, Alexander-Arnold is behind Keiran Trippier on the international stage, with Gareth Southgate opting to select the Atletico Madrid man instead.
The right-back area is perhaps England’s strongest area, with Manchester City’s Kyle Walker struggling to make Southgate’s last two squads.
Nonetheless, Alexander-Arnold will be hoping to continue to prove his worth on the club stage, so it can benefit him and potentially push him ahead of Trippier for England.
