McClaren has spoken about his change in job title following his return to Derby.
Reappointed Derby County manager Steve McClaren has spoken about the change in his job title since his last stint with the Rams, as reported by Derby Telegraph.
Many people turned their noses up at the news that Derby had re-hired McClaren as their manager, especially considering that it had not been all that long since he was sacked by the club.
However, there is now a sense of cautious optimism around the iPro Stadium, and with a tough run of fixtures coming up now is the time to get behind the new man at the helm.
During his first tenure at the club the 55-year-old was known as the “head coach”. However, now that the former England gaffer is back he goes by the title of “manager”. It probably means little in practice, but it certainly has people interested.
“I think it’s just a job title,” said McClaren to Derby Telegraph.
“The last time we kind of set the vision and the philosophy, and everybody bought into that. Myself and Sam did that.
“Since then I left and Mel (owner and chairman Mel Morris) has come in. Talking to Mel it is great because it is kind of the same philosophy and the same messages. So we just have to do it again.”
McClaren will be hoping he can go one step further with Derby this time round, having led the club to the edge of greatness before losing the 2013 play-off final in a heartbreaker.
With Huddersfield Town, Sheffield Wednesday and Wolverhampton Wanderers on the horizon, Derby will certainly have to be on top form if they are going to turn their fortunes around.
