Steve McClaren names two players who were excellent against Watford

Newcastle United went down 2-1 to Watford in the Premier League at the weekend.

Newcastle United head coach Steve McClaren has told The Chronicle that Moussa Sissoko and Georginio Wijnaldum were excellent against Watford at the weekend.

The Magpies suffered a 2-1 defeat to Watford away from home at Vicarage Road in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

After a goalless first half, Odion Ighalo put the Hornets in the lead in the 46th minute, and Craig Cathcart doubled the advantage from close range on 58 minutes.

Jamaal Lascelles halved the deficit for Newcastle with a headed effort in the 71st minute.

Sissoko and Wijnaldum started the game and played for the entire 90 minutes, and head coach McClaren was impressed with the two midfielders.

“We controlled the game and I think other players are responding (to Shelvey),” the Englishman told The Chronicle. “I thought Sissoko was excellent, Wijnaldum too. I thought we did everything today but win the game.”

Over the course of the 90 minutes, France international midfielder Sissoko had a pass accuracy of 74%, created one chance, put in three crosses, attempted seven dribbles, won 50% of his headers, and made one interception and one block.

Wijnaldum, a Netherlands international midfielder, took one shots, had a pass accuracy of 80%, created three chances, put in one cross, attempted two dribbles, won 67% of his tackles, and made one clearance and one block.
