Leeds United’s chances of finishing in the top six of the Championship seem to be over.
The former Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest boss has also advised how Leeds should now regroup and challenge for the Championship playoffs next season.
McClaren said on the Sky Sports Daily show on Sky Sports News on Thursday morning (11:20am, March 8, 2018) regarding Paul Heckingbottom’s disappointing start as Leeds head coach: “Ideal situation to go into. 10, 12 games left, assess the squad, look at the summer market and kick on from there, because Leeds, I thought, were one of the best teams, top six teams, at the beginning of the season. They have really fallen way badly through injury, suspension, change of manager.”
Planning for next season
Mathematically Leeds can still finish in the top six of the Championship this season, but it is hard to see the West Yorkshire outfit put together a run of positive results in the final few weeks of the season.
The 3-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Elland Road on Wednesday evening has pretty much put flight to the Whites’ hopes of getting promoted to the Premier League at the end of the season.
For Leeds to finish in the top six of the Championship next season, they should start planning from now on and get an early start on things.
