Everton are unbeaten in their first three Premier League matches.
Steve McClaren has told Sky Sports News, which was broadcast on 12th September, that he believes Everton could be the surprise package this season.
McClaren was impressed with the squad that Everton had assembled last term, even though they badly underperformed.
And the former England boss suggests that the Toffees could challenge at the top of the Premier League table, under the guidance of Ronald Koeman.
“You’d love to be Ronald Koeman going in at Everton,” McClaren said. “The quality they have in the squad… We played against them last season, and they have some frightening players. If he gets them going, Everton could be the surprise package.”
Everton have started this campaign in fine form, winning two and drawing one of their first three matches.
The Toffees are currently in eighth place in the Premier League standings, but they could move even higher up the table this evening.
Everton take on Sunderland at the Stadium of Light later today, and they are the favourites to pick up the three points.
The Black Cats are still searching for their first victory of the campaign after a poor opening.
If Everton do pick up the win on Wearside they could move up to as high as second in the Premier League standings.
