Steve Lomas has backed Rangers star Kyle Lafferty to seize his chance if he gets one this weekend in the Old Firm derby.

Lomas, an ex-St Johnstone manager, told the Daily Record that Lafferty is underrated.

He also expresses sympathy for his fellow Northern Irishman at not being able to displace top scorer Alfredo Morelos.

He said: “People talk about Kyle and say he’s a big daftie but he’s not stupid.

“He knows Morelos is doing well and it will be hard to displace him. It’s just a case of being ready and keeping his head down.

“You can’t get momentum when you’re sitting out matches or going on for 20 or 25 minutes here and there.

“The good thing for Stevie is that Kyle got minutes for Northern Ireland. He goes back to his club in better shape than when he left and that can only be a good thing.”

It seems a long time ago now, but Lafferty already has one winner to his name over Celtic this season.

This came when he was leading the line for Hearts back in August, and it was a performance which helped clinch a move to Rangers.

Lafferty has had a difficult time at Ibrox so far. That can quickly change if he comes off the bench to score a winner this weekend.
