Steve Kerr has confirmed that Jonathan Kuminga currently has no clear path back into the Golden State Warriors rotation.
Steve Kerr has had a tumultuous relationship with Jonathan Kuminga over the years. The Golden State Warriors head coach hasn’t always used their 2021 first-round pick.
Many have speculated that Kerr isn’t including Kuminga in his rotations because he doesn’t see him as that. And it appears Kerr has just confirmed that Kuminga isn’t likely to make his way back to the rotation.

Steve Kerr on Jonathan Kuminga’s place in the rotation
Speaking after the Golden State Warriors’ recent win over the Brooklyn Nets, Steve Kerr was asked about Jonathan Kuminga’s playing time and the forward’s ability to find a rhythm.
The coach’s response offered a clear picture of how the staff currently views his role — not as a short-minute energy player, but as someone who needs extended runs to be effective.
“It’s tough because he’s not really a short-minute player. I played a bunch of guys… 10 minutes. JK is a guy who needs his rhythm.
“He’s not like a Gui (Santos) who’s going to come in or Pat (Spencer) and just fly around and play with great energy for four minutes and come out.
“He needs some rhythm. He always has to stay ready. There’s a pathway there, but right now, it’s not there. But things change quickly in the NBA.”
Kerr’s tone reflected empathy for the challenge, but his phrasing — particularly “right now, it’s not there” — underscored that Kuminga’s spot in the active rotation remains closed for the moment.
Jonathan Kuminga’s uncertain fit as trade talk grows
The quote lands at a time when reports have linked Kuminga’s name to potential trade discussions, with teams across the league monitoring Golden State’s situation.
For a player once viewed as a developing cornerstone, the current stretch marks a setback in trust and usage.
Kerr’s mention that “things change quickly in the NBA” offered a faint signal of flexibility, but not commitment.
It left the impression of a coach open to future opportunities while acknowledging present limitations — a polite confirmation that, right now, Kuminga has no clear route back into meaningful minutes.
For Kuminga, the waiting game continues, with his next opportunity — in Golden State or elsewhere — likely to depend on how the front office navigates the weeks ahead.
