Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United sit top of the Championship table heading into 2019.

Fans of Leeds United celebrate during the Sky Bet Championship match between Leeds United and Blackburn Rovers at Elland Road on December 26, 2018 in Leeds, England.

Sky Sports pundit Steve Howey has admitted that Elland Road is ‘not a family friendly’ place and the crowd are ‘proper against you’ as he praised Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa for doing a ‘fantastic’ job.

The Yorkshire club are currently sitting top of the Championship table as they crave a return to the Premier League after being out of the wilderness for over a decade.

Come the turn of 2019, it will have been 15 years since Leeds United last tasted top-flight football in a period that has seen them fall into the third tier of English football.

Former Newcastle United defender Howey explained what it is like playing at Elland Road and what the club needs to do in order to keep their promotion push alive.

“As a player, you do love playing in those type of atmospheres,” Howey told Sky Sports News on 28/12/2018 at 11:50 am. “It’s proper against you and we are not mentioning some of the stuff that gets said, but it’s obviously not family friendly.

“But it’s a great stadium to play in. They have been in the wilderness for a little bit, but the manager has come in and done a fantastic job. Again, it’s just about keeping it going.”

Since their defeat to promotion rivals West Brom at the start of November, Leeds have won seven games on the bounce, including leaving it late in their previous two matches.

After coming from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Aston Villa last Sunday, Bielsa’s side netted two injury-time winners at home to Blackburn Rovers on Boxing Day to claim a valuable three points.

Forward Kemar Roofe, who has scored 13 goals during this campaign, netted the winning goals at both Villa Park and at Elland Road.

Leeds have a chance to extend their three-point lead at the top of the table on Saturday when they host Nigel Adkins Hull City.
