Newcastle United are said to be chasing a goalkeeper in the January transfer window.

Steve Harper has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 18th December, that he believes Rafael Benitez is making a mistake by prioritising signing a goalkeeper at Newcastle United.

It is thought that Newcastle want a new number one in January, with Benitez struggling to pick between Rob Elliot and Karl Darlow this season.

Both Elliot and Darlow have been given game time in recent weeks, but neither have excelled at Premier League level.

Newcastle are now believed to want a new stopper in the January transfer window.

But with Benitez potentially only having a limited budget to spend, Harper feels he should be investing in other areas of the squad.

“The priority is fire power. They need a number 10, an out and out centre forward, and he’s gone on and on about a goalkeeper, but there are other areas in need of major surgery, before he gets a goalkeeper,” Harper said.

Newcastle’s poor form of late has led to concerns rising that they could be relegated this season.

Newcastle lost 1-0 to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in their most recent match, which means that they have now gone nine games without a victory.

Benitez’s men have now slipped into the relegation zone, with their next contest coming against West Ham United on 23rd December.
