Leeds United announced Thomas Christiansen as their new manager yesterday.

Steve Evans has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 16th June, that he hoped Leeds United would have appointed a British manager rather than Thomas Christiansen.

Evans, who was in charge of Leeds for part of the 2015/16, had been enthused by suggestions that Nigel Pearson could have taken over at Elland Road.

However, Leeds shocked their supporters yesterday, when they announced the relatively unknown Christiansen, as their manager.

And Evans said: “The question that every Leeds fans will have is ‘will he come and make a big difference’. I suppose from their point of view, the disappointing thing is that there is some great names that have been linked.

“You look at the likes of Nigel Pearson, who has been out there, Aitor Karanka, Jaap Stam down at Reading.

“And then it’s an unknown in terms of coming from a level of football that, perhaps, you would say is a downwards step.

“I really hoped they’d gone British and traditional, and I think the Leeds fans would have welcomed that.”

Thomas Christiansen

Christiansen is not a name which is familiar with the bulk of British fans, as his time has been spent managing in Cyprus to date.

Christiansen guided APOEL into the Europa League knockout stages last time, but lost his job at the Cypriot side.

Christiansen is said to have wowed Andrea Radrizzani during the interview at Leeds, and he immediately became the Yorkshire side’s first choice.

The 44-year-old boss will be under pressure to make a fast start at Leeds, as the Whites enjoyed a productive campaign last time out, under the stewardship of Garry Monk.

Leeds finished in seventh place in the Championship last term, narrowly missing out on a play off spot.
