Former Leeds United boss Steve Evans should return to Elland Road this summer in attempt to sign Lewie Coyle for Peterborough United.

Evans, who is now in charge at Posh, is expected to make wholesale changes at the ABAX Stadium this summer – and he should use his past contacts at Leeds to his advantage.

Evans was only at Leeds for a season, but during his time with the Yorkshire side, he did look to provide some of the club’s more promising youngsters opportunities.

The likes of Ronaldo Vieira and Bailey Peacock-Farrell were given their first chances by Evans, and Coyle was another player who Evans promoted to Leeds’ senior squad.

The right-back caught the eye of Evans in training, with his performances impressing the outspoken manager.

“I love that boy and he’s got a real chance, but he’s suspended and the FA advised us that we can’t involve him at Wycombe, otherwise he would have been,” Evans said to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“His time will come. In the short term we need to get him playing men’s football from Under-21s – there’s a world of difference when three points are at stake.

“He’s training with the first team every day now and in two-and-a-half to three weeks, I’ve seen him get much, much better. And I mean significantly better.”

Coyle now has first-team experience under his belt, after spending last season out on loan at Fleetwood Town, but his future at Leeds remains unclear.

With Luke Ayling and Gaetano Berardi already at the club, Coyle’s chances of breaking back into Leeds’ starting line-up look limited.

And a loan, or even a permanent switch, to Posh could be a great option for all parties.

Peterborough are looking to strengthen in the right-back position, with Liam Shephard their only solid option in that slot currently.

And Coyle should be made one of Evans’ top targets this summer for Peterborough, as he looks to build a squad capable of achieving promotion from League One next term.
