Glasgow Rangers full-back James Tavernier has been excellent at Ibrox this season.

Steve Evans has told the Daily Record that he feels that Rangers full-back James Tavernier is good enough for Manchester City and is better than what Manchester United or Chelsea currently have at right-back.

Evans worked alongside Tavernier at Rotherham and the Record reports that he provided Mark Warburton with something of a reference when the former Gers boss was looking to bring the defender to Ibrox.

And Evans – who is a Celtic fan so may be hoping that Tavernier’s performance in today’s Old Firm game puts his teammates to shame – insisted that the 26-year-old is better than what most Premier League heavyweights have at their disposal.

“If Tavernier played at Man City, would he slot in? I think he would,” he told the Record. “Arguably, he’s better than anything Man United or Chelsea have in that position.

Steve Evans manager of Leeds United reacts during the Sky Bet Championship match between Leeds United and Blackburn Rovers on October 29, 2015 in Leeds, United Kingdom.

“Chelsea play with wing-backs but if you do that, Tavernier would be among the best in the country. Having James tied to a long-term deal at Rangers is good for Scottish football.”

Tavernier has looked to be back at his best for the Gers this season, performing well defensively and continually looking a threat when Graeme Murty’s men are going forward.

And he has added another string to his bow by proving to be an excellent leader and getting the recognition for that by being given the armband over the last few weeks.

Whether Evans’ suggestion that Tavernier would be good enough to play for Manchester City, Manchester United or Chelsea would be met with agreement amongst the majority of the Rangers fans is unclear – but if he performs against Celtic today and the Gers pick up a positive result, then Evans will surely be more convinced than ever that he is good enough for the very best in England.
