Newcastle United are going great guns in the Championship.
Speaking to the Football League Paper (quoted by Inside Futbol), Steve Evans has paid tribute to the “magnificent” Newcastle United fans and believes they will be rewarded with Premier League promotion this season.
United endured a tough start to life in the Championship and lost their first two games – away at Fulham and home to Huddersfield Town, who now sit top of the table.
But Newcastle have bounced back in superb fashion, winning all five of the league games which have followed since then.
Rafael Benitez’s side flashed their promotion credentials on Tuesday by smashing QPR 6-0 at Loftus Road in a victory which consolidates the suggestion that the Magpies are destined to bounce back to the top flight.
Former Leeds and Rotherham boss Evans tipped the North-East side for promotion at the start of the campaign, and the Scottish manager feels the same way now for obvious reason.
“At the start of the season, I said Newcastle United would be champions and, despite a poor start, they are now up and running in the Championship”, Evans told the Football League Paper, via Inside Futbol.
“Those magnificent fans deserve nothing other than the Premier League – they will be back!”
Newcastle are doing great. They are second in the Championship, one point behind unbeaten Huddersfield, but this remains a tricky league and complacency could lead to all sorts of bother for Benitez if he does not keep his boys grounded.
They welcome Wolves to St James’s Park on Saturday afternoon.
