Aston Villa are currently in 17th place in the Championship table.

Steve Clarke has told Sky Sports that he believes Aston Villa are in a relegation scrap now.

Villa lost 2-0 against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park last night, and their performance was highly disappointing.

Steve Bruce’s men caused some problems early on, but as soon as they fell behind, they never looked like getting back into the game.

Newcastle scored their first goal through Yoan Gouffran, before Henri Lansbury netted a calamitous own goal.

Villa are now just six points above the drop zone, with Bruce’s men still looking for their first win of 2017.

And when asked whether Villa were now in a relegation battle, Clarke said: “Yeah, I don’t think you can hide from that fact. It’s a tough game at the weekend and they could go into it really nervous.”

Villa’s fixture list is doing them no favours, while the pressure is on them to get back to winning ways.

Bruce’s side are next in action against promotion chasing Derby County at the weekend, and another defeat would be disastrous.
