Aston Villa were beaten 2-0 by Newcastle United at St. James’ Park last night.
Steve Clarke has slated Aston Villa’s players for showing a lack of character on Sky Sports, during their coverage of Steve Bruce’s side’s match against Newcastle United.
Villa were beaten 2-0 by Newcastle at St. James’ Park last night, and their performance in the second half was dire.
The claret and blues had caused the home side a few problems in the early stages of the match, but they lost their way after Yoan Gouffran scored the first goal of the night.
And Clarke, who used to manage Villa, has questioned the attitude of the players in Bruce’s current squad.
He said: “Villa’s players didn’t step forward. They look like a group of players that have lost confidence. They didn’t try and get back into the game.
“When you come to St. James’ Park you need to show some character.”
Villa could not get going in the second half, and conceded a cheap goal when Henri Lansbury diverted a Jamaal Lascelles shot into his own net.
Villa’s defeat on Tyneside has left Bruce’s men in a very worrying position in the Championship table.
The Midlands side are currently lodged in 17th place – just six points above the bottom three.
Villa are next in action at the weekend, when they take on Derby County, still looking for their first victory in 2017.
