Aston Villa went into this campaign as favourites to win the Championship, much like Newcastle United last term.

Steve Bruce has insisted to Aston Villa’s official website that his side can take heart from Newcastle United’s poor start to last season.

Newcastle lost their first two matches last term, before going on to win the Championship.

And Bruce claims that his Villa side can take heart from the way that Rafael Benitez’s men bounced back from a poor opening to the campaign.

Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce looks on during the Pre-Season Friendly between AFC Telford United and Aston Villa at New Bucks Head Stadium on July 12, 2017 in Telford, England.

He said: “There’s a long way to go.

“Newcastle lost their opening two games last season and went on to be successful.

“So we have to turn it around and turn it around quickly.”

Villa had endured a woeful start to their Championship campaign, with Bruce’s men well below par in every league match played to date.

The claret and blues have failed to win any of their first three matches, and were beaten by Reading last night.

Villa fell to a 2-1 defeat against Jaap Stam’s men, and they were booed off by their own supporters who travelled to the Madejski Stadium.

Bruce is now under severe pressure, with calls for him to lose his job only growing louder.

Villa are next in action at the weekend, when they take on Norwich City at Villa Park.
