Steve Bruce thinks Carroll, Gayle and Saint-Maximin can be crucial

Newcastle United should be able to welcome back three attacking players soon.

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has told The Chronicle that he thinks Allan Saint-Maximin, Andy Carroll and Dwight Gayle will be crucial when they return.

The Magpies lost 3-1 at Liverpool on Saturday afternoon, as whilst Jetro Willems fired Newcastle into an early lead, a Sadio Mane brace and a Mohamed Salah goal secured a win for the hosts.

Newcastle gave a decent account of themselves, but came up short against the Champions League winners, for which there is no great shame.

Bruce didn’t really have many options on the bench to change the flow of the game, with three attacking players currently out injured.

Strikers Andy Carroll and Dwight Gayle have both been out all season, whilst Saint-Maximin has been limited to just 40 minutes of action since signing from Nice.

Without those three attackers, Newcastle are lacking options to change the game, and Bruce has commented on that fact in light of Saturday’s defeat.

Bruce feels that all three players will be crucial when they come back, because they will give him options from the bench, and feels it is now a big week for certain players as they look to prove their fitness ahead of facing Brighton at home.

“We haven’t got much coming off the bench. Allan Saint-Maximin, Andy and Dwight Gayle are crucial in that department,” said Bruce. “We have been dealt a difficult hand there. We have picked up injuries that have limited us a little bit. It’s a big week for a couple of them, Andy in particular, it would give us a goal threat,” he added.
