Villa manager Bruce has spoken about the importance of the club’s 2-1 victory over Reading.
Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce has commented on just how important the win over Reading at the Madejski Stadium was for the Midlands side, as reported by Birmingham Mail.
Ever since Bruce was announced as Roberto Di Matteo’s successor at Villa, there has been a mixture of optimism and uncertainty surrounding the club.
After all, this is a man who was in charge of Villa’s bitter rivals Birmingham City for an extended period of time. However following their long overdue away victory at Reading a lot of people chose to be positive.
A late Jordan Ayew penalty secured the 2-1 victory at the Madejski, ending a long 437-day wait for a victory away from Villa Park. Naturally there was a great sense of jubilation among supporters.
However Bruce has insisted that he is not just settling for that one triumph. “Unquestionably it’s given everybody a lift,” he said to Birmingham Mail.
“Not just the players, but the staff who have been following the team, and the medical staff who have been traipsing up and down the country for 15, 18 months.
“I hoped it’d given everyone a lift – but that’s all it is. We’ve got a victory – but now we must must try and improve on that and go on a bit of a run if we possibly can.”
Whether or not Villa fans’ first choice was Bruce, they cannot deny that he has a rich background when it comes to getting teams promoted from the Championship.
The next test for the club will be whether or not they can build up a level of momentum and consistency, with the next fixture being a tough clash with Fulham.
