Tommy Elphick is yet to make a league appearance for Aston Villa this season.

Steve Bruce manager of Aston Villa looks on during the Sky Bet Championship match between Preston North End and Aston Villa at Deepdale on November 1, 2017 in Preston, England.

Steve Bruce has told the Birmingham Mail that Aston Villa defender Tommy Elphick could come back into contention.

Elphick appeared to be heading towards the exit door at Villa, after struggling to find form since his arrival last summer.

The former Bournemouth man was expected to be a key player for Villa when Roberto di Matteo brought him to the Midlands club, but he has failed to convince.

And with John Terry and James Chester forming a brilliant partnership, Elphick was struggling to force his way into Bruce’s plans.

However, an injury to Terry in Villa’s last match against Sheffield Wednesday has led to suggestions that Elphick could return to the claret and blues’ line-up.

And when asked if Elphick was in his selection plans, Bruce said: “I’m not closing the door on anybody. Tommy Elphick is an experienced player, obviously he hasn’t been involved of late with the form of Chester and Terry but he’ll come back into the reckoning, of course.”

Elphick’s only performances for Villa so far this season have come in the EFL Cup.

Villa’s next match comes against Queens Park Rangers after the international break, when they will hope to prove they can still pick up victories without their club captain.
