Newcastle United are trying to get the best out of Miguel Almiron.
Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has suggested to The Northern Echo that Miguel Almiron’s best position is still a little unclear.
The Magpies spent big to land the Paraguayan international from Atlanta United in January, with Rafael Benitez finally landing him on a £42,000-a-week deal after a lengthy chase (Spotrac).
The step-up from Major League Soccer to the Premier League was always bound to be difficult, but Almiron has shown signs of his quality in the final third.
However, Almiron has still yet to open his goalscoring account for Newcastle, and the long wait for a goal appears to be playing on his mind.
The 25-year-old seemingly just needs one goal to really get going for Newcastle, but it’s on Steve Bruce to find a way to get the best out of him.
The problem with that is that Bruce doesn’t really appear to know Almiron’s best position. Of course, he didn’t sign Almiron, but there will be concerns about the following comments.
Bruce suggested that Almiron was a ‘free spirit’ at Atlanta as a number 10, but he needs to be scoring goals to justify being played there for Newcastle.
Bruce noted that he could be a winger given his pace, but it seems Newcastle and Bruce are still trying to find the best role for such a big-money investment, which is of great concern.
“He became a free spirit at Atlanta as a No 10, an attacking midfielder,” said Bruce. “That’s the thing you label him and he’s one of them where, ‘what is his best position?’ Because if you are off the striker then you have to be getting 10-12 goals a season.”
“Is he a wide player? Is he a No 10? Is he a midfielder? I think that’s the one. I thought he was excellent against Spurs and the other day if he had scored. I think it’s just a matter of time. He’ll be OK. As a footballer, he’s a good player,” he added.
