Steve Bruce has admitted he has been blown away by the impact made by one player who he once managed before being sold to Liverpool for £10 million.
It has been a whirlwind managerial career for former Manchester United defender Steve Bruce, with the Geordie manager having spells at Sunderland and Newcastle United.
As well as these two stints, Bruce had a successful spell at Hull City where he guided the Tigers to the Premier League before leaving in controversial circumstances in July of 2016.
One of the players who Bruce had under his stewardship was Scottish left-back Andy Robertson, before the defender moved to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool a year after Bruce’s departure.

Bruce on Robertson
Robertson was at Hull whilst Bruce was manager but the Englishman made the decision to leave the Tigers on the eve of their Premier League campaign with former United assistant Mike Phelan placed in charge, before Marco Silva then took over.
“When I signed him, he arrived at Hull with his mum and dad. I thought I had signed a schoolboy,” Bruce said on talkSPORT. “He was that young and that young-looking. In all honesty, at the start of his career, I didn’t really want to throw him in because he was young, but we had the first game of the season against QPR away in the Premier League, and we didn’t have a natural left-back.
“I am looking around and thinking, but I have just signed one, I am going to throw him in because he was just so young. He never came out of the team. That’s how well he had done.
“To follow his career now and what he has done for Liverpool is one of the great bits of management which you enjoy seeing the lads have a really great career.”
Robertson’s stellar career
Since moving to Anfield nearly seven years ago, the Scottish defender has done superbly well for the Reds and has won everything there is to win in the English game.
He has won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup since moving to Anfield and he has been one of the best bargain buys in Premier League history.
BBC Sport reported back in 2017 that Liverpool had signed the Scotsman from Hull for £10 million, which was an astute and brilliant transfer to pull off.
