New Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce has shared to the Daily Star what was discussed when he was contacted about the vacant managerial position.

The former Hull City boss became the new Villa boss earlier this week after they elected to sack Roberto di Matteo.

The Italian managed just one win in 12 games at Villa Park, leaving them just two points clear of the Championship relegation zone.

It did not take long to name Bruce as his successor, with the club clearly hoping he can lead them to his fifth promotion from the second tier.

And it seems the future was the topic of conversation as Bruce shared to the Daily Star what was discussed in his original phone call.

“The opportunity to manage a massive club like this is just fantastic,” he said.

“When I got the call all we discussed was what can we do now and what could we do in the future. When I look at the squad we are capable of mounting a challenge and this season too.”

If Aston Villa are to challenge this season, it will take an impressive run of form between now and the end of the campaign to do so.

With just 10 points to their name so far, they are already 10 points away from the final two playoff places.

Last year 74 points was the tally needed to seal the last play-off spot, meaning Villa would need to pick up at least 22 wins from their remaining 35 games to secure a similar tally.

That would be some going but at least they now have a manager who is an expert in securing promotion at the helm.
