Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has told the Chronicle that Mike Ashley is firmly behind pushing the team forward.

Ashley visited Newcastle’s training ground yesterday, suggesting he was planning to take a more hands-on approach following Rafael Benitez’s departure.

Ashely is fighting against the tide at Newcastle, with great frustration felt about his ownership.

Even though Newcastle have broken their transfer record this summer, it has not been enough to stop some Magpies fans from cancelling season tickets in protest against his ownership.

But Bruce has stuck up for Newcastle’s owner, and suggested that he wished all the players well for the new campaign on the training ground yesterday.

“I don’t know if it’s a priority but it’s important that to go forward, and he wants the club to go forward, if he didn’t, he wouldn’t have been here this morning I wouldn’t have thought,” Bruce said.

“He took time to come and see the new staff who he met before and wish the players all the best. That can only be a positive thing.”

Newcastle fans have accused Ashley of not spending enough during his time at the helm, and his failure to retain Benitez has gone down badly.

Even if Newcastle do spend big this summer, it will not be enough to change opinions of most of the St. James’ Park crowd.

Newcastle have already brought in Joelinton this summer, and Allan Saint-Maximin could be the next player to follow the Brazilian forward to St. James’ Park, as reported by the Chronicle.
