Aston Villa got through in the League Cup last night by beating Colchester United 2-1.
Villa named a much changed line-up for the League Cup fixture against their League Two opponents, but were still able to come through with a 2-1 victory.
And Bruce admits that he is delighted that his gamble paid off, with Villa progressing to the next round.
He said: “We took a big gamble on some lads who haven’t played in a long while. I thought it was an ideal opportunity for them. Then there was the sprinkling of youngsters.
“Overall I am delighted we got through.”
Villa were pushed all the way by Colchester, but just about did enough to get through.
The claret and blues scored through Scott Hogan and an own-goal, to get through to the second round.
Villa’s stand out performances came from youngsters Josh Onomah, Callum O’Hare and Jed Steer, with the trio all putting in excellent displays in the cup fixture.
Villa are next in action at the weekend, when they take on Cardiff City in their second Championship match of the season.
