Aston Villa were humbled by Peterborough in the FA Cup yesterday.

Villa boss Steve Bruce spoke to reporters in the aftermath of his side’s bitterly disappointing 3-1 FA Cup defeat to Peterborough United yesterday, and did not hold back in his criticism of his players, as quoted by the Express & Star.

The Villans had been on a decent run of form before yesterday’s game, recording back-to-back Championship victories, but they were totally outclassed by Grant McCann’s men, with the League One side eventually running out as comfortable winners.

The west Midlands outfit actually took the lead early on, but the under-strength side that Bruce opted for were out-muscled and out-thought for the remainder of the game – a sad indictment of Villa’s strength in depth.

Bruce addressed the media after the game, and shared how the amount of shots that the visitors had on his side’s goal was ‘totally ridiculous’, as quoted by the Express & Star:

Villa manager Steve Bruce reacts after a near miss during the Sky Bet Championship match between Aston Villa and Middlesbrough at Villa Park on September 12, 2017 in Birmingham, England.

“Peterborough have had something like 20 attempts on our goal, which is totally ridiculous. We have not done enough, without the ball especially. We have not competed well enough to get through the cup tie. That is the most disappointing thing for me.”

The only consolation for Villa is that they will now be able to solely focus on the Championship, and with just five points separating them and second placed Derby County, a free run at the league might just bode well for their automatic promotion hopes.
