Aston Villa have been disappointing for the majority of their Championship campaign.

Villa boss Steve Bruce sat down for an exclusive interview with the club’s official website, and admitted that his side’s hopes of making the play-offs this season are slim to none.

The Villans have endured a woeful campaign so far this term, despite their recent resurgence that has seen them win five from their last six outings, and they currently sit in 12th position in the Championship table, 11 points adrift of sixth placed Sheffield Wednesday.

And with just eight games remaining, they have surely left it too late to make a push for the promotion spots.

But Bruce, who took the reigns at Villa Park in October 2016, believes they still have a chance, albeit a small one, and explained to AVFC.co.uk how his side will need to be pretty much flawless during the run-in:

“We have a squeak. To stand a chance, realistically… yes probably we need to take 24 points. If we won seven and drew one… maybe. You never know. It’s a tall order for us – but for sure we won’t give up. The thing that disappoints me is that I wish we were just poor in January rather than awful.

Following the resumption of Championship action after the two week international break, Villa face back-to-back home games against Norwich City and Queens Park Rangers respectively, and with both Wednesday and Fulham facing consecutive away games, they have every chance of closing the gap on those above them even further still.

And maybe then, the Villa Park faithful will start to really believe.
