Aston Villa snapped up John Terry on a free transfer last week.
Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce has told the Birmingham Mail that he will speak to new signing John Terry about the captaincy situation.
Vila had been quiet in the transfer market before making one of the biggest splashes this summer, as they managed to land defender Terry on a free transfer following his departure from Chelsea.
John Terry
Terry, 36, ended a 22-year association with Chelsea earlier this summer when his contract expired, and he went out on top by winning a fifth Premier League title with the Blues.
Added to his five FA Cups, three League Cups, Champions League and Europa League titles during his time with Chelsea, Terry has been all too familiar with winning trophies over the years, and he will now be looking to do the same with Villa.
Terry presumably arrives to play alongside James Chester in the heart of the Villa defence, but that could give manager Bruce a real dilemma moving forward.
Chester – who played under Bruce at Hull – is the current Villa captain, but Terry skippered Chelsea for 13 years, and also captained England too, but was stripped of the armband twice.
Bruce could now feasibly give the captaincy to Terry, but having enjoyed a strong relationship with current skipper Chester, he has been asked just who will be wearing the armband next season.
Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce
Bruce has told the Birmingham Mail that he has yet to speak to Terry about the situation but will be doing so in the near future, but he did hint that Villa need Terry’s leadership on and off the pitch, suggesting that he could challenge Chester for captaincy.
“I will speak to him over the next two weeks but we haven’t even spoken about that to be honest,” said Bruce. “Everyone knows what I think of Chessie. I have John Terry and James Chester. Then I have Elphick and the other boy Baker too. In that area of the pitch we are decent but it is not just his positional play, it is what he can give us.”
“The club has had a tough time over the last couple of years and sometimes you need an old fashioned pro to turn the whole thing around in the dressing room. You don’t get John Terrys very often which is why we made the biggest play the club could to bring him here and get everyone focused on what we want to do,” he added.
