Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has suggested to the Chronicle that it is a ‘bit strong’ to claim that his side threw the towel in against Leicester City.

Newcastle were beaten 5-0 yesterday, with the Magpies collapsing during the second half.

Bruce’s men were powerless to resist as Leicester carved them open time after time in the second 45 minutes at the King Power Stadium.

Newcastle’s performance in the second half has seen them heavily criticised by their supporters.

And even though Bruce was not happy with his side’s defending, he did not feel that they just gave up.

“I think that’s a bit strong,” Bruce said, when asked whether Newcastle threw in the towel.

“It’s a difficult one because second and third goals came so quickly. Some of our defending left a lot to be desire and it all ended up in a horrible, horrible situation for us.”

Newcastle were down to 10 men in the second half, following Isaac Hayden’s sending off, but their performance was still inexcusable.

The Magpies were absolutely humiliated as their poor start to the season went from bad to worse.

Newcastle are currently sat in 19th place in the Premier League table, after taking just five points from their first seven games.
