Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle has not been able to train at all so far this season.

Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce arrives before the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Arsenal at St. James's Park, Newcastle on Sunday 11th August 2019.

Steve Bruce has told the Chronicle that Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle’s injury problem doesn’t seem to be getting any better.

Gayle has not played for Newcastle all season, even though there were hopes that he could have a part to play.

When Newcastle lost both Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon over the summer it was suggested that Gayle could have a chance of breaking through.

However, the forward has missed the entirety of pre-season and has still not been seen since the start of the new campaign.

Bruce has always spoken highly of Gayle, but there are now concerns about his current injury problem, which isn’t healing.

And Bruce admits that Gayle has been sent to a specialist to try and get to the bottom of the problem.

“Dwight Gayle ‘doesn’t seem to be getting any better’ and saw a specialist yesterday,” Bruce revealed about the £20 million-rated striker (Northern Echo).

Gayle is playing for his future at Newcastle this term, so missing such a crucial chunk of the campaign already is hardly ideal.

It is still unclear when Gayle will return but he could well be fourth choice by the time he is available, with Joelinton beginning to impress, Yoshinori Muto scoring in midweek and Andy Carroll getting close to returning to fitness.
