Steve Bruce revealed that nothing will be sorted within the next “month to six weeks” regarding new deals for Sheffield Wednesday’s soon-to-be out-of-contract players.

Wednesday have nine players in the final few months of their deals, including recent first-team regulars Keiren Westwood, Liam Palmer and George Boyd.

Speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield earlier this week, Bruce said he is due to discuss contracts with the Owls chairman, Dejphon Chansiri, “in the next few weeks”.

But asked on Friday whether or not decisions will be made before the season’s end, the new Sheffield Wednesday manager told the club’s official Facebook page: “It might not be right at the back end of the season but certainly, certainly, there won’t be anything done over the next month or six weeks anyway, because I think I’ve said it to everybody, I want to have a good look [at them] – and that includes training.

“And of course, this morning, we’ve got 24 outfield players training. So there’s a lot of players to be looking at – and that’s not healthy.

“I don’t like taking a squad of 19 and leaving six or seven behind. The squad know I’m going to trim the squad down.

“And, as I said, I’m going to give everybody a chance. That still stands. Two weeks in I still haven’t seen five, six or seven play.”

As well as Westwood, Palmer and Boyd, Daniel Pudil, David Jones, Almen Abdi, Kieran Lee, Gary Hooper and Marco Matias are all out-of-contract at Sheffield Wednesday this summer.

Lee and Hooper and currently recovering from lay-offs of more than a year, with the latter having returned to full training on Wednesday.
