Newcastle United were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Leicester City on penalties last night.

Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce arrives before the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Arsenal at St. James's Park, Newcastle on Sunday 11th August 2019.

Steve Bruce has admitted to the Chronicle that three Newcastle United players have all picked up injuries last night.

Matt Ritchie, Emil Krafth and Jetro Willems all had to be subbed off by Newcastle, during their defeat on penalties against Leicester City.

And Bruce admits that Ritchie’s injury, in particular, looks like a bad one.

“The mess Matt Ritchie’s in – it was horror challenge,” Bruce raged.

“When I see the mess on his leg. We fear ankle damage, he’s got three stitches in his leg. I don’t want players sent off but when it’s horror challenges, it isn’t good. It’s a horror one, it’s over the top. Believe me, it’s a horrible one.

“They’re muscle injuries. Jetro’s got a hamstring and Emil’s got a thigh strain.”

Bruce will be hoping that have both Krafth and Willems back in time for the weekend for Newcastle, otherwise they look short of options.

With both Ritchie and Willems out, Newcastle could be forced to play Paul Dummett at left wing-back, if Bruce continues with his plan to play five at the back.

Matt Ritchie of Newcastle argues with the linesman during the Premier League match between Norwich City and Newcastle United at Carrow Road on August 17, 2019 in Norwich, United Kingdom.

That could be a blow as Dummett thrived on his last appearance in a central defensive role.

Newcastle’s next Premier League game comes against Watford, where they will be looking to build on their unexpected success against Spurs.
