Aston Villa are expected to be highly active in the January transfer window.
Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce has told the Birmingham Mail that he will have put together a squad capable of achieving promotion next term or risk being sacked.
Villa finished in a disappointing 13th place in the Championship table this time around.
The claret and blues have spent heavily in both of the last two transfer windows, but their new additions are yet to have the desired impact.
And Bruce admits that he is going to try and ensure that Villa’s future new arrivals help to improve his squad – otherwise he will risk being sacked.
“I have got to have a squad of players that are going to mount a challenge, otherwise I’ll not be sitting here. Quite simple,” Bruce said.
“It’s important that we have a good summer and pre-season and, of course, the most important thing is that we assemble a squad that is capable.
“We finished 13th and that’s the lowest I’ve finished in my career. I can’t be happy with it when I’ve got the most wonderful opportunity in my career but I’ll do everything I possibly can to get us a team which can find a way to be at the top end.”
Villa are expected to make a vast amount of changes, as Bruce attempts to improve the quality of his side.
The claret and blues currently have a bloated squad, and many of their fringe players will need to be offloaded to make room for new additions.
Bruce has already admitted that he is formulating transfer plans at Villa.
