Steve Bruce has surprisingly suggested to the Chronicle that Newcastle United full-back Jetro Willems could play as a central midfielder this season.

Newcastle are short in midfield, and Jonjo Shelvey’s injury in their first game against Arsenal has hardly helped matters.

The Magpies are now limited in options in the centre of the pitch, following the departure of Mo Diame over the summer.

But Bruce insists that Willems can shift inside, despite most Newcastle supporters expecting him to be signed as a full-back.

“Ki wasn’t injured, he just wasn’t part of the squad today,” Bruce revealed.

“Jetro could have played in midfield if I’d wanted to do.”

Willems made his Newcastle debut as a left-back at the weekend, as he was brought off the bench against Arsenal, but it did not go according to plan.

The new signing was caught on his heels, and was at fault for the one goal which Newcastle conceded in the contest.

Arsenal went on to win 1-0 at St. James’ Park, with Newcastle looking rather disjointed in an attacking sense throughout.

Bruce’s side are next in action at the weekend when they take on Norwich City.
