Steve Bruce says his near three-year stint as Sunderland manager can be deemed as stability for the Black Cats as he aims to stay at Aston Villa for the long haul, the Mirror report.
Both Sunderland and Villa have gone through numerous managers in recent years, what with both clubs having struggled near the bottom of the Premier League table leading to Villa’s eventual relegation.
The Villans appointed Roberto Di Matteo in the summer, yet the Italian’s reign last all of 11 Championship games before he was sacked and replaced by former Sunderland boss Bruce.
The 55-year-old joined Villa on a rolling contract but he harbours amitions of a long-term stay as he seeks the sort of stability he lacked at a number of his previous clubs.
“I did nearly three years at Sunderland which seems a long time for them. That is stability for them!” Bruce explained, quoted by the Mirror.
“If I can do four or five years here like I did at Hull then I know the club will be in a far better place. That’s got to be the aim. It really is a privilege to manage a club like this. In fact, I’ve been waiting 20 years to be at a club of this size.”
Bruce’s comments suggest Villa are the biggest club he has managed in his career to date, and they certainly have the potential to once again become an established top-10 Premier League side.
Sunderland, having avoided relegation by the skin of their teeth last term, are once again struggling in the top flight as they find themselves currently bottom of the table without a league win this term.
Stability is needed at both clubs in order for them to move forward, and considering the starts both have made this term it would not be a surprise to see Villa and Sunderland face off in the Championship next season.
